- Veteran journalist, radio host and educator, Rick Mitchell joins www.Mykindamusic24.com.
Rick Mitchell has been writing about all kinds of music for 50 years. He worked as the jazz and pop music critic at Willamette Week and The Oregonian in Portland in the 1980s and at the Houston Chronicle in the 1990s, and has freelanced for dozens of national and regional publications through the decades.
Rick is making a significant contribution to jazz radio, as the program “celebrates the musicians who are keeping this great music alive and passing it forward into the 21st Century.
Jazz remains alive and vibrant today because of the artists who continue to perform, record and evolve the art form. Names we’ve known for decades like Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea and Sonny Rollins. And a younger vanguard, including artists such as Jason Moran, Esperanza Spalding and Robert Glasper. They are keeping the music alive by making jazz their life work.
Each week, Rick focuses on a selected jazz artist, putting their work into historical perspective while also presenting their current recordings. It is an opportunity to give a deeper listen, with Rick’s guided tour and quotes from the musicians themselves, to artists whose work we may be familiar with, but perhaps not their personal stories. ‘Jazz in the New Millennium’ is a modern mainstream jazz program that also explores jazz artists forays into other musical genres, from traditional swing and bebop to funk, fusion and hip-hop, as a part of their career journeys.
Sundays at 10am Rick's current show
Wednesday 3pm a past show from Rick's extensive archive.

70's Soul Show (Soul,Funky and Disco from the 70's, plus Star interviews)
Wednesday 4pm Friday 10am with
Ady Crampton.
Listening to and playing music has always been a large part of my life.
I bought my first vinyl in 1974 aged 7, by 1983 I was immersed in the UK scooter scene and began
attending the rallies which boasted ex-Wigan Casino DJs on their all-nighter line-up.
There was so much music that I hadn’t heard before and of course, as there was a record bar in each
venue, my record collection increased although never as much as my wants list.
I really get a kick out of sharing my passion for music and have enjoyed playing my 70s soul, funk and disco records to the world ever since.
Join me each week for two hours of 70s soul funk and disco where I’ll be spinning those newies and
crossover classics from back in the day plus each week I’ll be chatting with a star of the 70s to find out
what they’re up to now that’s right here on Real Life Radio, Saturday nights from 6pm

New Show airing from January 2023 -Live At The Bop Stop with Daniel Peck
Thursday 6pm Friday 1PM
Daniel Peck hosts Live at the Bop Stop, a program featuring live jazz recorded direct to air from the stage of The Bop Stop in Cleveland, Ohio.
The program was started during the pandemic as a way to continue to provide live performances to the Northeast Ohio community. But seeing an absence of live jazz on the airwaves, the program production team worked to expand the reach of the program on both terrestrial radio and via podcast.
Mr. Peck, a fifteen year radio veteran, grew up in the Detroit area and had nightly exposure to live jazz on the radio. "I just assumed it would be around forever." In reality, live jazz, or even terrestrial radio based non smooth jazz programs are relatively scarce in North America.
But why Cleveland? Well, first off, everyone involved with the program lives here. But beyond that, Cleveland punches above its weight, with two full time listening rooms, another dozen venues that feature jazz weekly, and half a dozen educational organizations and universities with active, funded and thriving jazz programs. A strong legacy of philanthropy and the presence of both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a 'Big Five' Symphony Orchestra help cultivate a culture for musical creation. "And the jazz here, I think, has more soul and gospel influence than it does in a lot of other American cities," adds Mr. Peck.
Gabe Pollack, who relaunched the Bop Stop as a working club in 2014, hosts the first 100 episodes of the program, with Mr. Peck taking over for Season Eight beginning in 2023. Composer Bryan Kennard transitions into a Producer role while Dr. Pete Naegele, whose work includes podcast development with Adam Curry, and Shawn Gilbert whose technical work includes the development and launch of Radio.Cloud software for terrestrial radio stations in Europe, continue to provide technical production assistance.

New York Tonight Show with Rich Keith.
Nightly 10pm -1am
Rich Keith is a radio guy at heart (masquerading as a business man for the last 40 years to put food on the table) who grew up in the New York Metropolitan Area in the 1960s and 1970s.
According to Rich, “A few misguided college professors thought that they taught me how to be a broadcaster while, in reality, the best broadcast schools in the world were available all up and down the New York Radio dial”.
Rich’s reflections of his radio education: “The Harvard and Yale of on air radio schools was WNEW 1130. The faculty included William B Williams, Ted Brown, Jim Lowe and Al Jazzbeaux Collins. I took my daytime lessons in the “Make Believe Ballroom” and went to night school in the Purple Grotto”.
While spending time playing Jazz and Standards up and down the New York radio dial himself, most recently at Jazz Radio leader WBGO (2012 to 2017), his main obsession (since 2009) has been running Pure Jazz Radio with studios in New York.
Now, Rich is delighted to join the talented staff of presenters at Mykindamusic24.

Jazz with John Hellings
Sat 5pm (Repeats Sun 2am and Tuesday 8pm) from Oct 2nd
Nearly forty years ago, a new commercial radio station in town led to a Saturday job - reading the racing results on the sports show which was questionable because John had not a clue about racing!
Then came the chance came to get into radio full time and the day job was shelved. Even during this time, presenting a breakfast show on five mornings a week, very early mornings at that, John was able to do a two hour jazz show at the weekend.
All this time in radio and whenever there was an opportunity, John has enjoyed presenting the music which was his first love – jazz. Right from the time he presented on hospital radio he produced a jazz show. His foray into commercial radio was because of a band show. The station wanted bands of any kind, brass, military, folk. They got a straightforward big band show which was a success and that led onto a jazz show as well.
The BBC wanted him to present and produce a big band show. They got big band and singers show and that lasted for ten years. Then he presented and produced a jazz show that went out to the whole of the Midlands and that ran from 2009 until 2020.
John grew up to the sounds, first of Ted Heath and the Johnny Dankworth big bands and then onto the west coast jazz of Gerry Mulligan and Shorty Rogers. But there is nothing that is off limits and much that is vintage and a great amount that is current is always well worth a listen – especially some of the younger musicians who are producing some wonderful jazz.

Mike Kemp's Jazz Basement
Commencing 8pm 2nd October (Repeats following Tuesday 2am, Thursday 5pm) Mike Kemp’s Jazz Basement presents straight ahead jazz featuring music from the early days, swing era, bebop, jazz standards and latin. With the first record he heard, Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five playing West End Blues, at twelve years old Mike’s love affair with jazz began. The impact of that record set the direction his life would take. Two years later, hearing pianist Billy Kyle playing with the Louis Armstrong All Stars live in concert inspired Mike to start piano lessons. When, aged twenty, he had completed an apprenticeship in electronic engineering, quite by chance, he was offered and accepted a job as pianist with a jazz quartet playing for the American military in France, Spain, Germany and Morocco. He never returned to industry. These days he leads a classic New York style piano, double bass and drum trio, freelances and is a member of The Sticky Wicket Swing Orchestra. He also runs a YouTube Channel called Mike Kemp’s Garage Jazz putting out one video a week featuring himself playing electric piano, sometimes solo and sometimes with a guest artist. He started it during Covid lockdown and will continue. Check it out. To Contact Mike; mktrio88@gmail.co |

Introducing Nick Davies and the 'Crazeology Jazz Show'
Introducing Nick Davies and the 'Crazeology Jazz Show'
In terms of music as far back as I can remember I have always loved music and was playing my Mum and Dads records collection from a early age on my very own second hand record player. It was not soul but rock and roll and crooner’s from a collection of 78’s that I had been given. There was not a day when I did not have some form of musical tune in my head and I always felt that I needed more. So much so that I even pushed my mother into buying a pair of shoes because it came with a copy of Don’t Go Breaking My Heart by Elton John and Kee Kee Dee. My introduction to DJing came in the early 1980’s when I and a school friend use to DJ at his house on two turntables and a collections of vinyl records. We use to pretend we were on the radio and I have had the desire to play records for peoples enjoyment ever since. I was not a blue eyed soul boy in those days but someone who was a metal head and got his enjoyment from bands like Iron Maiden and AC/DC. The conversion to Soul would come much later. It was during this period that I really got heavily in pirate radio station like Radio Caroline and Lazer 558 which I could listen to quite freely as I was living in Kent at the time and they broadcasted from the North Sea. I like the idea of free radio and the fact that they were non-play listed. The DJ just played out of the record box. In 1987, I went to work in London and started to listen to pirate stations like Kiss and JFM who played mainly soul and disco. A light switched on in my head and I knew then that this was not only the music I needed to listen to but also to play; the trouble is it took me 25 years to realise that dream thank to Radio Winchcombe. The Crazeology Radio show is not your traditional jazz music show as we like to play music across the spectrum’. The concept arose from the many different radio shows that I have listened to over the years bringing then all together as one. Since I have been a DJ I have ventured back to play vinyl and showcase jazz releases from days gone by to crowds at open vinyl events that are organized by the Stroud and Gloucester Vinyl Connection or SGVC for short. Todd's Turntable with TODD GORDON.
Although middle aged when he took up his music career, Todd Gordon quickly became recognised as one of Britain's leading jazz and swing singers. His lifelong passion for the American Songbook dates back to his childhood. Indeed, he was just 11 years old when he became hooked on Sinatra and, five years later, went on to meet another of his idols - Ella Fitzgerald - who later serenaded him on stage during her concert. It was a life-changing moment, consolidating his love for this kind of music.
Todd has performed at leading jazz festivals and renowned venues and clubs, such as Cadogan Hall, The Sage Gateshead, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, The Royal Opera House, Bridgewater Hall, Ronnie Scott’s in London and the Algonquin in New York.
In other concerts, he has joined forces with a wide range of stars including Sir Michael Parkinson, Jacqui Dankworth, Clare Teal, Eddi Reader, Claire Martin, Justin Currie and the BBC Big Band. With four albums under his belt, he added another string to his bow by writing and presenting radio programmes for the BBC. This led to his own weekly radio show - Todd’s Turntable - featuring the very best of vocal jazz, swing, easy listening and a few surprises along the way.

BOB SINFIELD
Dr Sin's Hot Club
I fell in love with jazz aged 12 on hearing Spike Milligan on the wireless, playing tracks by Woody Herman, Charlie Christian and Stan Tracey. A decade or so later, I got into radio myself (by winning an Invisible Man lookalike contest) and began hosting jazz and blues shows. The strangest thing I had to do was sit in a studio in Camden and broadcast to Holland. The people who run radio stations are very nice but they've got no sense of direction.
In the interests of research - and at the expense of the licence-payers - I visited the States and met such luminaries as Louis Bellson, Anita O'Day, Bob Crosby and Jo Stafford...but not Artie Shaw. He kept me on the phone for two hours telling me he didn't have time to talk to me.
Back home, I fared better by interviewing Johnny Dankworth, Eartha Kitt (nowhere near as fearsome as the legend would suggest) and, most significantly, George Chisholm with whom I collaborated on a book about his life. It's called Gentleman of Jazz and is still available in paperback; make me happy and buy it at once.
Dr Sin's Hot Club airs on Saturday at midday.

That's when he started becoming an audio engineer as well.."I've done so many recordings and live broadcasts of all kinds of music since the 1970s, I have lost count (Needless to say, I have been very fortunate in that regard as the music bug hit me hard, in grade school)".
At University in 1971, and as a Radio-TV-Film major, Jim began to be an on air host of various music programs on the radio, including a nightly Jazz program. "I'm almost embarrassed to say that next Fall, I will be celebrating 50 years of being a DJ of sorts. In those heady early days, I was also a "City Correspondent" for Downbeat Magazine, and did hundreds of interviews with Jazz Masters, learning so much about the music, directly from the source."
Forms and Feelings has been on the air continuously on various stations since 1981. Jim also had a weekly live jazz performance series known as In The Moment for 10/12 years on KCSM in San Mateo, California. Jim was the recording engineer for the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra for 15 years and have had lengthy stints as an Operations Manager, and General Manager at a few public radio stations in the U.S., and still works as an Operations technician at one of the largest public radio stations in America. Thrilled to be joining you. Like I said, "I've been really lucky."
